The Vallecas Staircase Case

In 1990-1991, the Gutiérrez family of Vallecas, Madrid, experienced poltergeist phenomena following their daughter’s use of a Ouija board. The case is notable for being the only Spanish paranormal event to generate an official police report acknowledging unexplained phenomena.

The Ouija Session

In 1990, eighteen-year-old Estefanía Gutiérrez participated in a Ouija board session at school. The session was interrupted by a teacher, and the planchette was thrown away. Shortly after, Estefanía began experiencing seizures.

The Death

Despite medical treatment, Estefanía’s condition worsened. She died in August 1991 under circumstances that puzzled doctors. They could not determine the exact cause of her sudden death.

The Phenomena

After Estefanía’s death, the family’s apartment became the center of intense poltergeist activity. Loud noises occurred at night. Furniture moved. A crucifix flew off the wall. Brown stains appeared and reappeared.

The Police Report

Inspector José Pedro Negri responded to the family’s calls. He witnessed strange phenomena personally. His official report acknowledged events that could not be explained, making this the only such police document in Spain.

The Investigation

Paranormal researchers investigated the case. They documented ongoing activity. The family eventually moved, but the phenomena reportedly followed briefly before fading.

Assessment

The Vallecas case is significant for its official police documentation of unexplained phenomena. The connection between the interrupted Ouija session, Estefanía’s death, and the subsequent haunting has never been explained.
