The Possession of Antoine Gay

Antoine Gay was an illiterate carpenter from Lantenay, France, who in 1840 became possessed by what he claimed were two entities: a demon named Isacaaron and a benevolent spirit. His case lasted five years and was investigated by Church authorities.

The Beginning

Gay reported that possession began after sleeping in a room where occult rituals had been performed. He began experiencing violent seizures and speaking in languages he had never learned. During episodes, he would reveal hidden sins of those around him.

The Entities

Two spirits allegedly inhabited Gay. Isacaaron was a demon of impurity who caused violent episodes. A gentler spirit also spoke through Gay, offering advice and prophecies. The two sometimes argued through Gay’s body.

The Revelations

During episodes, Gay revealed secrets about visitors that he could not have known naturally. He exposed hidden sins, identified relics as genuine or fake, and made prophecies that witnesses claimed came true. He also displayed an understanding of theology impossible for an uneducated man.

The Exorcism

Multiple exorcisms were attempted over five years. Church officials carefully documented the case. Eventually, in 1845, a successful exorcism expelled the entities. Gay recovered completely and resumed his normal life.

Assessment

The Antoine Gay case is notable for its duration and documentation. The Church’s thorough investigation produced detailed records. The case influenced Catholic understanding of possession and exorcism protocols.
