The Earling Possession

In 1928, Emma Schmidt (known by the pseudonym Anna Ecklund) underwent an exorcism at a convent in Earling, Iowa, that lasted 23 days. The case was documented in detail by witnesses and became one of the most thoroughly recorded American possessions.

The History

Emma had first shown signs of possession at age fourteen in 1882. Initial exorcism provided temporary relief, but the demons returned. By 1928, at age forty-six, she required definitive help.

The Location

Father Theophilus Riesinger arranged for the exorcism to take place at the Franciscan convent in Earling. The nuns agreed to host the ritual despite the dangers. Mother Superior Steigman documented the proceedings.

The Phenomena

During the 23-day exorcism, Emma displayed extraordinary phenomena. She levitated above the bed, hovering near the ceiling. Her body swelled to twice its normal size. She regurgitated massive quantities of foul material. She spoke in multiple languages she had never learned.

The Demons

Several demons were identified during the exorcism, including Beelzebub and Judas Iscariot. Most disturbing was Emma’s own father, who confessed to attempting to make her commit incest. The curse had been placed by her father and his mistress.

The Resolution

After 23 days of near-continuous ritual, the demons departed with a terrible cry. Emma returned to normal consciousness with no memory of the ordeal. She lived peacefully for the remainder of her life.

Assessment

The Earling case is among the most thoroughly documented American possessions. Multiple witnesses, detailed contemporary records, and the extended duration provide unusual evidence. Father Riesinger’s subsequent pamphlet made it widely known.
