The Possession of Nicole Aubrey

Nicole Aubrey was a young woman from Vervins, France, who became possessed in 1565. Her case became a public spectacle, with exorcisms performed before thousands as part of Catholic efforts against Protestantism during the Wars of Religion.

The Beginning

Nicole was sixteen when she began showing signs of possession. She claimed her grandfather, who had died without last rites, was causing her affliction as punishment for the family’s Protestant sympathies. Her symptoms included convulsions, superhuman strength, and speaking in unknown languages.

The Public Exorcisms

Nicole was brought to the cathedral at Laon, where exorcisms were performed publicly. Crowds of up to 10,000 gathered to watch. The demon speaking through Nicole praised Catholicism and condemned Protestantism, making the case a powerful tool for the Catholic Church.

The Demonstrations

During exorcisms, Nicole reportedly levitated, vomited objects, and displayed knowledge she could not naturally possess. The demon named Beelzebub claimed to be prince of demons. He was forced to bow before the Eucharist and holy relics.

The Resolution

After months of public exorcism, Nicole was declared freed. She became something of a celebrity. Catholic clergy used her case as proof of their faith’s power. Protestants cried fraud and propaganda.

Assessment

The Nicole Aubrey case demonstrates how possession could serve political and religious purposes. Whether genuine or staged, the case influenced thousands and remains one of the most public possessions in history.
