The Teresita Basa Murder Case

In 1977, Teresita Basa, a Filipino respiratory therapist, was murdered in her Chicago apartment. The case went cold until a coworker began speaking in Teresita’s voice, identifying the killer. The information led to an arrest and conviction.

The Murder

Teresita Basa was found stabbed and burned in her apartment on February 21, 1977. The fire had been set to cover the crime. Her jewelry was missing. There were no witnesses and no leads. The case went unsolved.

The Possession

Remy Chua, a coworker who barely knew Teresita, began experiencing strange episodes. During these episodes, she spoke in Teresita’s voice, giving information about the murder. Her husband, a doctor, documented these sessions.

The Information

The voice identified the killer as Allan Showery, another hospital employee. It described how he had access to Teresita’s apartment, named items he had stolen, and said the jewelry would be found with his girlfriend.

The Investigation

The Chuas contacted police. Investigators were initially skeptical but found Showery had indeed been at the crime scene. They found the stolen jewelry with his girlfriend, exactly as the voice had described.

The Conviction

Allan Showery was arrested and convicted of Teresita Basa’s murder. He pleaded guilty to avoid the death penalty. The spirit testimony was not used in court, but the information it provided led to the physical evidence.

Assessment

The Teresita Basa case represents one of the few instances where information from an apparent spirit communication led to a criminal conviction. Whether genuine possession or extraordinary coincidence, the case achieved justice for the victim.
