Prudhoe Hospital, originally known as the Newcastle Borough Lunatic Asylum, opened in 1899 to serve the psychiatric patient population of Newcastle and surrounding areas. The Victorian institution housed hundreds of patients over its 94 years of operation, closing in 1993. The hospital witnessed the full spectrum of psychiatric treatment evolution, from Victorian restraint methods through electroshock therapy and lobotomies to more modern approaches. The abandoned buildings have developed a reputation for paranormal activity, with urban explorers and investigators reporting numerous encounters with what they believe are the spirits of former patients and staff.

Witnesses exploring the derelict hospital report seeing apparitions of patients in hospital gowns from various eras, often appearing confused or engaged in repetitive behaviors. The sounds of crying, screaming, and moaning echo through empty corridors, and many report hearing footsteps following them through the building. Shadow figures have been spotted moving between rooms and disappearing through walls. Visitors frequently experience sudden feelings of being watched, unexplained cold spots, and overwhelming sensations of sadness or anxiety in certain areas of the complex.

The isolation wards, chapel, and treatment rooms are considered the most actively haunted locations. Investigators have documented unexplained voices, doors slamming shut, and objects moving on their own. The areas where electroshock therapy was administered generate particularly intense phenomena, with reports of electrical equipment malfunctioning and witnesses experiencing tingling sensations and static electricity. EVP recordings have captured what appear to be patients calling out, asking for help, or simply saying names. The hospital’s morgue and the underground tunnels connecting various buildings are said to be especially oppressive, with multiple reports of malevolent presences and the sensation of being followed by hostile entities.
