Severalls Hospital
Derelict psychiatric hospital where visitors report apparitions of patients, phantom nurses, and unexplained cold spots in treatment rooms.
Severalls Hospital opened in 1913 as a psychiatric facility designed to house 2,000 patients in what was then considered a progressive “colony” system. The hospital operated for nearly 84 years before closing in 1997, leaving behind a sprawling campus of abandoned wards, administrative buildings, and a morgue. During its operation, Severalls saw countless patients subjected to controversial treatments including electroshock therapy, lobotomies, and long-term isolation, creating an atmosphere many believe is saturated with residual trauma.
Paranormal investigators and urban explorers who have ventured into the abandoned complex report a wide range of disturbing phenomena. Apparitions of former patients in hospital gowns have been seen wandering the corridors, often appearing confused or distressed. Phantom nurses in vintage uniforms have been spotted conducting their rounds in wards that have been empty for decades. Visitors frequently experience sudden temperature drops, unexplained touches, and the overwhelming sensation of being watched. Electronic equipment often malfunctions, and many report hearing disembodied voices, crying, and the sound of medical equipment that is no longer there.
The hospital’s water tower, isolation wards, and electroconvulsive therapy rooms are considered the most actively haunted locations on the site. Several ghost hunting teams have captured compelling EVP recordings and unexplained anomalies on camera. Local legends speak of a particularly malevolent presence in the old morgue, where multiple investigators have reported being pushed or experiencing intense feelings of dread that force them to flee the building.
