The Skirrid Mountain Inn

Over 1,100 years old, the Skirrid is Wales’ oldest pub—and one of its most haunted.

The Hanging Pub

The inn served as a courthouse, and the staircase beam was used as a gallows:

  • 180 people were hanged here
  • Rope marks still visible on the beam
  • Judge George Jeffreys (“The Hanging Judge”) held court here
  • Criminals were executed after summary trials

Paranormal Activity

The Noose Sensation

Guests in certain rooms experience:

  • The feeling of a rope around their neck
  • Difficulty breathing
  • The sensation of being lifted
  • Cold hands grabbing their throat
  • Many refuse to stay the night

Fanny Price

A woman who died here in the 18th century:

  • Seen on the staircase
  • Wearing period clothing
  • Her rustling skirts are heard
  • She watches over the pub

Other Spirits

  • Soldiers from the English Civil War
  • Former prisoners awaiting execution
  • A woman in white in the restaurant
  • Heavy footsteps in empty corridors

The Beam

The original hanging beam remains in place:

  • Visitors feel compelled to look at it
  • Some claim to see figures hanging
  • Cold spots directly beneath
  • EMF readings spike here

Investigation Results

Paranormal teams consistently document:

  • EVPs of begging and crying
  • Unexplained shadows on cameras
  • Equipment malfunctions near the beam
  • Voices saying “help me”

The Skirrid Mountain Inn still operates as a pub and offers accommodation—for the brave.
