The Broadlands UFO Sightings

Broadlands, the Hampshire estate of Lord Louis Mountbatten, was the site of multiple UFO sightings from the 1950s until Mountbatten’s death in 1979. The admiral and statesman took the phenomena seriously, personally investigating incidents and corresponding with researchers.

The Location

Broadlands is a grand estate near Romsey in Hampshire. Lord Mountbatten, uncle of Prince Philip and great-uncle of King Charles III, used it as his country residence. The estate’s connection to the royal family makes the UFO activity there particularly notable.

The February 1955 Incident

The most significant sighting occurred in February 1955 when estate worker Frederick Briggs encountered a landed craft and its occupant. Briggs reported seeing a silver disc approximately thirty feet in diameter in a field. A humanoid figure in overalls stood nearby before both the being and craft departed.

Mountbatten’s Investigation

Lord Mountbatten personally interviewed Briggs and found him credible. He had the witness write a detailed account and took the report seriously enough to inform Prince Philip, who shared his interest in UFOs. Mountbatten corresponded with UFO researchers about the case.

Other Sightings

Multiple witnesses reported unusual lights and objects over Broadlands throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Staff and visitors described disc-shaped craft, unusual lights, and aerial phenomena that defied conventional explanation. Mountbatten documented these reports.

The Royal Connection

Prince Philip’s interest in UFOs is well documented, and Broadlands provided a connection between this interest and actual sightings. The involvement of such prominent figures lent credibility to UFO research during a period when it was often dismissed.

Assessment

The Broadlands sightings are significant for the caliber of the witnesses and investigators involved. Lord Mountbatten was a decorated military officer and experienced leader. His serious approach to the phenomena suggests they deserve more attention than they have received.
