The Colares UFO Flap

In 1977, the island of Colares in northern Brazil experienced a wave of UFO sightings that terrorized the population. The Colares events allegedly involved direct physical attacks on residents, with victims suffering burns, puncture wounds, and apparent blood loss from beams of light projected by the objects.

The Attacks

Beginning in August 1977, residents reported being attacked by bright lights from the sky. The lights, called “chupa-chupa,” would descend from glowing objects and strike people, usually while they slept.

Victims described a bright beam that paralyzed them while causing intense heat and pain. Many awoke with burn marks, puncture wounds, and symptoms of anemia. The attacks occurred nightly for months.

Operation Saucer

The Brazilian Air Force launched Operation Saucer to investigate. A team led by Captain Hollanda spent four months documenting hundreds of testimonies, photographing objects, and examining victims.

The operation produced over 500 photographs and hours of film. The team reportedly observed UFOs themselves. Medical examinations revealed radiation-like burns, puncture marks in triangular patterns, and reduced red blood cell counts.

Cover-Up

Operation Saucer was abruptly terminated and classified. For decades, Brazil denied its existence. Captain Hollanda eventually spoke publicly before his death in 1997.

The Colares flap stands apart from most UFO cases because of alleged physical attacks and documented military investigation.
