The Devon UFO Triangle
Multiple witnesses observed unexplained objects over rural Devon.
The Devon UFO Triangle
In the autumn of 1967, a concentrated wave of UFO sightings occurred across rural Devon, with objects reported over Dartmoor, the Exe Valley, and coastal areas. The number and consistency of reports suggested something unusual was occurring.
The Context
1967 was a significant year for British UFO sightings, with waves occurring across the country. Devon’s remote landscape and dark skies made it an ideal location for observing unusual aerial phenomena.
The Sightings
Between September and November 1967, dozens of witnesses reported seeing unusual lights and objects in Devon’s skies. The objects were variously described as disc-shaped, triangular, and cigar-shaped. They moved silently and performed impossible maneuvers.
The Dartmoor Incidents
Several sightings occurred over Dartmoor, where the dark moorland provided excellent viewing conditions. Witnesses included locals, tourists, and military personnel from nearby bases. The objects often hovered before accelerating away at high speed.
The Coastal Sightings
Objects were also seen along the Devon coast, sometimes appearing to emerge from or dive into the sea. The maritime connection has led some researchers to suggest underwater bases, though no evidence supports this theory.
The Investigation
The Ministry of Defence received numerous reports but offered no public explanation. Local newspapers covered the sightings, generating additional witness reports. The wave subsided by early 1968.
Assessment
The 1967 Devon UFO wave remains unexplained. The concentration of sightings in time and space, involving diverse witnesses, suggests genuine phenomena. Whether extraterrestrial, military, or something else entirely remains unknown.
