The Fort Beaufort Lights
A UFO fired upon by police demonstrated technology that baffled investigators.
The Fort Beaufort Lights
On June 26, 1972, police in Fort Beaufort, South Africa, responded to reports of a strange light on a local farm. When they arrived, they encountered an object that seemed to respond to their presence and, when shot at, appeared impervious to bullets.
The Sighting
A local farmer reported a strange glowing object hovering over his property. When police arrived, they saw a metallic disc with a glowing dome, hovering just above the ground.
The Confrontation
Officers attempted to approach the object, but it moved away when they came close. One officer fired his revolver at the craft. The bullets appeared to ricochet off. The object made a humming sound but showed no damage.
The Chase
Police pursued the object for several hours as it moved across the landscape. It seemed to play with them, staying just ahead before finally rising and departing at high speed.
Investigation
The South African Air Force investigated but reached no conclusions. The case was documented in official records and became one of the most famous UFO cases in South African history.
Assessment
The Fort Beaufort case is unusual for the direct confrontation between police and a UFO. The object’s apparent invulnerability to bullets and its cat-and-mouse behavior suggest intelligence behind its actions.
