The Hampshire Triangle Sighting
Police officers tracked a cross-shaped UFO across the county.
The Hampshire Triangle Sighting
On the night of November 6, 1967, police officers and other witnesses across Hampshire observed a large, cross-shaped or triangular object moving slowly across the sky. The sighting was reported to the Ministry of Defence and remains unexplained.
The Sighting
At approximately 9 PM, a police officer in Basingstoke observed a large, bright object in the sky. He reported it to headquarters, and soon multiple officers across Hampshire confirmed they were seeing the same object.
The Object
Witnesses described a large craft with a cross or triangular shape, illuminated by lights at its extremities and center. The object moved slowly, almost hovering at times, at an estimated altitude of several thousand feet. It made no sound.
The Tracking
Police officers tracked the object as it moved across Hampshire from west to east over approximately ninety minutes. Officers in different towns reported seeing it, allowing its course to be plotted. The object eventually disappeared toward the east coast.
The Investigation
The Ministry of Defence investigated the sighting. No explanation was offered publicly. The involvement of multiple police officers across a wide area, all describing the same object, made the case difficult to dismiss.
The Comparison
The object’s triangular shape anticipated similar sightings across Britain and Europe in later decades. The 1967 Hampshire sighting may represent an early appearance of the type of craft that would become common in UFO reports.
Assessment
The Hampshire sighting is significant for its multiple credible witnesses and extended observation period. The ability to track the object across an entire county demonstrated that it was a genuine physical phenomenon, not misperception or hoax.
