The Malmstrom AFB UFO Incident

On March 16, 1967, at Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana, an extraordinary event occurred: multiple Minuteman nuclear missiles simultaneously went offline while Air Force personnel reported UFOs hovering over the launch facilities. The incident remains one of the most significant UFO cases involving nuclear weapons.

The Event

Captain Robert Salas was the deputy missile combat crew commander on duty at Oscar Flight Launch Control Center in the early morning hours of March 16, 1967. A security guard called to report that a glowing red object was hovering over the facility’s front gate.

As Salas spoke with the guard, alarms began sounding in the launch control center. One by one, the ten Minuteman missiles under Oscar Flight’s control went into a “no-go” condition, indicating they had become unlaunchable. Within seconds, all ten missiles were offline.

Simultaneously, a similar event was occurring at Echo Flight, another launch control facility miles away. Captain Eric Carlson and First Lieutenant Walt Figel reported the same phenomenon: their missiles went offline while UFOs were observed in the area.

The Investigation

Air Force investigators descended on both facilities. The missiles were checked for technical malfunctions but none were found. The guidance and control systems showed no explanation for the failures.

Boeing engineers who worked on the Minuteman system stated that there was no known way the missiles could have failed simultaneously. The odds of such a coincidence were astronomical.

Official Response

The Air Force never publicly acknowledged a connection between the UFO sightings and the missile failures. The incident was classified, and personnel were instructed not to discuss it.

Captain Salas became a prominent UFO researcher after his retirement, speaking publicly about the incident and calling for government disclosure. Other witnesses have corroborated his account.

Significance

The Malmstrom incident suggests that whatever the UFOs are, they have both interest in and capability to affect nuclear weapons systems. Similar incidents have been reported at other nuclear facilities worldwide, suggesting a pattern of UFO interest in humanity’s nuclear capability.

The incident remains one of the most compelling cases for UFO interference with military operations.
