The Shoreham Airport UFO

On August 17, 1967, multiple witnesses at Shoreham Airport in West Sussex observed a metallic disc-shaped object hovering above the airfield. The sighting, which lasted several minutes, was reported to authorities and remains one of Sussex’s most credible UFO encounters.

The Airport

Shoreham Airport, now Brighton City Airport, is the oldest licensed airfield in Britain, having operated since 1910. In 1967, it was a busy facility with experienced aviation professionals whose testimony carried significant weight.

The Sighting

At approximately 3:15 PM, ground staff noticed a bright metallic object hovering at an estimated altitude of 3,000 feet above the airfield. The object appeared disc-shaped, with a dome on top, and reflected sunlight brilliantly. It remained stationary for several minutes.

The Witnesses

Among the witnesses were airport staff, pilots preparing for flights, and members of the public in the terminal area. Several witnesses had aviation or military backgrounds, giving them experience in identifying aircraft. All agreed the object was unlike any known aircraft.

The Object’s Behavior

After hovering motionlessly, the object began a slow rotation. It then accelerated at incredible speed, far exceeding any aircraft capability of the era, and disappeared toward the English Channel. The entire sighting lasted approximately seven minutes.

Official Response

Witnesses reported the sighting to the Ministry of Defence. An investigation was conducted, but no explanation was provided. The incident was documented in MOD files later released under freedom of information requests.

Assessment

The Shoreham sighting is notable for its multiple credible witnesses and daylight conditions. The presence of aviation professionals who specifically ruled out known aircraft types adds weight to the case. The object’s acceleration capabilities exceeded any technology known in 1967.
