The Socorro UFO Landing

On April 24, 1964, Socorro, New Mexico police officer Lonnie Zamora witnessed a UFO land in the desert, along with two small beings near the craft. The case was extensively investigated by the Air Force’s Project Blue Book and remains unexplained.

The Encounter

Officer Zamora was pursuing a speeder when he heard a roar and saw a flame descending toward the ground. Thinking a dynamite shack might have exploded, he drove toward the site.

He saw an oval, egg-shaped white object resting on the ground about 150 yards away. Near it stood two figures in white coveralls, approximately four feet tall. When Zamora approached, the figures entered the craft, which rose with a loud roar, hovering before flying away.

Physical Evidence

The landing site showed clear physical evidence. Four rectangular depressions marked where landing gear had rested. Burned brush indicated where the flame had touched vegetation. The marks formed a perfectly quadrilateral pattern.

Investigation

Project Blue Book sent investigator J. Allen Hynek, who found Zamora’s account credible and the physical evidence compelling. The Air Force conducted an extensive investigation but never explained the incident.

FBI documents later released showed the FBI was also involved in the investigation.

Assessment

The Socorro case is significant because of Zamora’s credibility as a police officer, the physical evidence, and the thorough official investigation. It remains one of the most convincing UFO cases in Project Blue Book files.
