Background

This is the closest thing the declassified record contains to a decisive test, and it is worth understanding why before reading what it found.

For most of the history of this subject, the argument has been conducted in a currency that cannot be audited. A witness sees a light and reports it honestly; a radar operator sees a return and cannot explain it; a pilot describes an object that outperformed his aircraft. All of that can be true and none of it can be checked, because the object is gone. Testimony does not have an isotope ratio.

Metal does. An alloy is a physical object with a measurable composition, and composition is not a matter of opinion or of memory. If a piece of a vehicle manufactured somewhere other than Earth were sitting in a drawer anywhere on the planet, a competent laboratory with a mass spectrometer could establish that fact in an afternoon and the argument would be over. This is why the material claims — the ones about recovered debris rather than recovered impressions — have always been the ones that mattered most, and why the people making them have been so reluctant to hand a sample to anybody who would publish the number.

One sample was handed over. This document records what happened to it.

What the document records

A magnesium alloy specimen had been publicly alleged to be a component recovered from a crashed extraterrestrial vehicle. The claims made for it were specific and unusually testable. It was said to function as a terahertz waveguide — a structure that channels electromagnetic radiation at frequencies between microwave and infrared — and to generate antigravity.

Those are not vague assertions of strangeness. They are engineering claims, and an engineering claim can be put on a bench.

The specimen went to Oak Ridge National Laboratory, in Tennessee. Oak Ridge is not a general-purpose laboratory chosen at random. It is the institution that separated the uranium for the first atomic weapon, and it has been doing isotope separation and materials characterisation continuously ever since. Establishing what a piece of metal is made of, and whether the ratios of its isotopes are consistent with terrestrial origin, is close to the centre of what Oak Ridge exists to do. If any facility on Earth were positioned to identify an alloy that had been manufactured somewhere else, it is this one.

The laboratory determined that the specimen was terrestrial in origin. It further determined that the specimen was not capable of functioning as a terahertz waveguide.

The All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office published its supplement to the Oak Ridge analysis in 2024, and recorded the page-level assessment plainly: identified as terrestrial.

What the finding does and does not settle

It is worth being precise, because precision is the only thing that separates this record from the thing it is examining.

The finding settles the specimen. It does not settle the subject. One magnesium alloy came back from Earth; that tells you about one magnesium alloy. It is not a demonstration that no anomalous material exists anywhere, and nobody at Oak Ridge claimed it was.

But it does something more useful than a general disproof, which was never available anyway. It closes a specific, named, load-bearing claim — one that had been carried for years as evidence, cited as though the analysis had already been done and had come back the other way. The analysis had not been done. When it was done, it went the ordinary way.

That is the pattern this archive keeps producing. The materials that survive to reach a laboratory turn out to be industrial. The materials that would be extraordinary are always the ones with a broken chain of custody: confiscated, destroyed, dissolved on handling, retained by a private owner, or held by a single researcher who will not release a sample. The Roswell memory foil, the most famous recovered object in the field, does not exist in any drawer anywhere. The Ubatuba magnesium was less pure than what Dow Chemical was selling commercially at the time. The Maury Island wreckage was slag from a Tacoma mill.

This one specimen was different only in that somebody finally let a laboratory look at it. That is the whole of its significance, and it is considerable.

Status of the case

Identified as terrestrial. The specimen is not of non-human origin, and it does not do what was claimed for it.

The standing invitation remains open, and it is not a rhetorical one. A sample, a laboratory that will publish, and a chain of custody that starts at the recovery and does not break, would end this argument in a week. Until one arrives, the honest reading of the physical record is the one Oak Ridge wrote down.
