High Strangeness and Modern Phenomenon Entities

Some witnesses report figures that do not fit the usual alien picture. These include the Men in Black, the Grinning Man, the Hat Man and Mothman. Researchers call this high strangeness, meaning events that are odd in ways that make them hard to file under any one explanation.

The page also covers newer types, from bedroom visitors and screen memory figures to starseed and indigo child claims, and a few miscellaneous cases. Many of these grew up inside online communities, so we note where a type is mostly a modern belief.

High Strangeness Entities

Illustrated depiction of Indrid Cold
26

Indrid Cold (The Grinning Man)

First encountered in November 1966 by Woodrow Derenberger on a West Virginia highway. Described as a tall man with an unnaturally wide, fixed grin, olive skin, and wearing a reflective blue-green suit. Cold communicated telepathically and claimed to be from the planet 'Lanulos.' Connected to Mothman sightings and the Point Pleasant phenomena preceding the Silver Bridge collapse. Popularised in John Keel's 'The Mothman Prophecies.'

Illustrated depiction of Mothman
27

Mothman

First sighted November 1966 in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, preceding the December 1967 Silver Bridge collapse. Described as 6-7 feet tall with a 10-foot wingspan and glowing red eyes, often without a discernible head. Witnesses reported feelings of dread and received prophetic warnings. John Keel's investigation linked Mothman to UFOs, Men in Black, and Indrid Cold. A harbinger entity associated with disaster, inspiring the 2002 Richard Gere film.

Three men in black fedoras, suits, and sunglasses beside a black sedan at a suburban house
28

Men in Black (MIB)

First documented by Albert K. Bender in 1953, who claimed three men in black suits intimidated him into abandoning UFO research. Described as tall, pale men in outdated black suits who display robotic behaviour, ask strange questions, and threaten UFO witnesses into silence. Often arrive in black vintage cars. Theories range from government agents to aliens to interdimensional beings. Gray Barker's 1956 book 'They Knew Too Much About Flying Saucers' established the legend.

Illustrated depiction of Shadow People / Hat Man
29

Shadow People / Hat Man

Documented in sleep paralysis research and paranormal literature, with reports increasing since the 1990s. Described as dark, featureless humanoid silhouettes, often seen in peripheral vision or during sleep paralysis. The 'Hat Man' variant wears an old-fashioned fedora or wide-brimmed hat. Associated with feelings of dread and being watched. Theories include interdimensional entities, negative spirits, and hypnagogic hallucinations.

Illustrated depiction of Sandown Clown
30

Sandown Clown (Isle of Wight 1973)

Encountered in May 1973 by two children near Lake Common, Sandown, Isle of Wight. The entity called itself 'Sam' and was described as 7 feet tall, wearing clown-like attire with a pointed yellow hat, green tunic, and red collar. It had painted-on facial features, wooden antennae, and communicated through a microphone-like device. The being led children to a hut and behaved in a friendly but bizarre manner before disappearing permanently.

Pink alien with bulbous veined head crouched on a highway barrier with oncoming headlights
31

Dover Demon (Massachusetts 1977)

Sighted on April 21-22, 1977, in Dover, Massachusetts, by four teenagers in three separate encounters. Described as 4 feet tall with a large watermelon-shaped head, glowing orange eyes, long thin limbs, and peach-coloured rough skin. It had no visible mouth, ears, or nose. Cryptozoologist Loren Coleman investigated and named it. Never seen again after those two nights. Remains unexplained and doesn't fit typical alien or cryptid categories.

Illustrated depiction of Spring-Heeled Jack
32

Spring-Heeled Jack (UK 1837-1904)

First reported in 1837 in London, terrorizing residents for decades across England. Described as tall, thin, and able to leap over walls and rooftops. Features included pointed ears, glowing eyes, clawed hands, and the ability to breathe blue flames. Some accounts describe a devilish appearance with bat-like wings. Sightings persisted into the early 1900s. Often considered a precursor to modern entity reports, blending cryptid and supernatural characteristics.

Illustrated depiction of Black-Eyed Children
33

Black-Eyed Children (BEK)

First documented in 1998 by journalist Brian Bethel, who described two children with completely black eyes requesting entry to his car in Abilene, Texas. Reports have proliferated online since, describing children aged 6-16 with solid black eyes who appear at doors or car windows, requesting permission to enter. They evoke inexplicable terror in witnesses. Theories range from demonic entities to urban legend to interdimensional beings.

Illustrated depiction of Phantom Clowns
34

Phantom Clowns

First documented wave in 1981 in Boston, with reports of clowns in vans attempting to lure children. Subsequent waves occurred in 1991, 2016 (massive global phenomenon), and periodically since. While some incidents involve real individuals, many remain unexplained with no perpetrators ever identified. The 2016 wave saw reports across North America, UK, and Australia within weeks. Some researchers connect these to high strangeness and social contagion.

Illustrated depiction of Stick Figures / Stick Men
35

Stick Figures / Stick Men

Reported since at least the 2000s, often in rural areas and near roads at night. Described as impossibly thin, black humanoid figures with elongated limbs, moving in jerky, unnatural ways. Height estimates range from 7-10 feet. Witnesses describe them as two-dimensional, like living shadow puppets. Associated with feelings of unreality and dread. May be related to Shadow People phenomena but with distinct characteristics.

Modern Phenomenon Entities

Full-body grey alien standing in a bright corridor with oversized head and thin gaunt body
81

Bedroom Visitors

A category describing entities encountered during sleep paralysis or nocturnal experiences. Described variously as Greys, shadow figures, hooded beings, or undefined presences. Research by David Hufford and others documents the 'Old Hag' phenomenon across cultures. Whether neurological, paranormal, or extraterrestrial, these experiences share consistent features: paralysis, presence, pressure on chest, and terror.

82

Screen Memory Entities

Beings allegedly used by aliens to mask their true appearance in abductee memories. Experiencers report seeing owls, deer, or other animals that, under hypnosis, are revealed as Greys or other aliens. The concept, developed by abduction researchers, suggests aliens can manipulate perception and memory. This raises questions about the reliability of any entity description.

Illustrated depiction of Walk-Ins
83

Walk-Ins

Concept where extraterrestrial or higher-dimensional souls enter human bodies, typically during near-death experiences or with the host's consent. The walk-in soul brings cosmic awareness while the original departs. The concept emerged from Ruth Montgomery's 1979 book 'Strangers Among Us' and influences spiritual UFO communities who believe many influential people are walk-ins.

84

Starseeds/Star People

Individuals who believe their souls originated on other planets or star systems before incarnating on Earth. The concept emerged from Native American traditions and 1970s channelling. Starseeds allegedly carry cosmic DNA, remember past lives on other worlds, and have missions to help humanity evolve. The concept has grown substantially through social media communities.

Illustrated depiction of Indigo/Crystal/Rainbow Children
85

Indigo/Crystal/Rainbow Children

New Age concept describing waves of children incarnating with enhanced psychic abilities and cosmic missions. Indigo children (born 1970s-90s) allegedly are warriors against the old system. Crystal children (1990s-2000s) are peaceful healers. Rainbow children (2000s onwards) are highly evolved. Some connect these to alien hybridisation programs or soul group missions.

Illustrated depiction of Skinwalker Ranch Entities
86

Skinwalker Ranch Entities

The 36-acre Utah property has generated reports of diverse entities since the 1990s: Bigfoot-like creatures, orbs, poltergeist phenomena, cattle mutilations, and UFOs. The Gorman family documented years of encounters before selling to NIDS and later Brandon Fugal. The ranch suggests either a window area where multiple phenomena manifest or an elaborate hoax/misperception.

Illustrated depiction of Hellier Cave Entities
87

Hellier Cave Entities

Documented in the 2019 documentary 'Hellier,' investigating goblin-like creatures in Kentucky caves. The investigation followed synchronicities and connections between Somerset, Kentucky reports and broader phenomena. While no clear entities were encountered, the documentary exemplifies modern paranormal investigation and the high strangeness category.

Illustrated depiction of Airport/Transit Entities
88

Airport/Transit Entities

Reports of strange humanoids at airports and transit hubs, often described as extremely tall or short with unusual features, walking through crowds unnoticed except by the witness. Associated with Men in Black sightings and the concept of disguised aliens moving through human society. The airport setting suggests dimensional transit points.

Illustrated depiction of Hospital/Deathbed Visitors
89

Hospital/Deathbed Visitors

Beings reported by dying patients and hospital staff worldwide. Described as hooded figures, light beings, or deceased relatives. Some connect these to Grey aliens, noting similar telepathic communication and physical descriptions. Near-death experiences often include entity encounters that share characteristics with alien contact narratives.

Illustrated depiction of Internet/Digital Entities
90

Internet/Digital Entities

Theoretical beings that exist within or manifest through digital systems. Concepts range from AI achieving consciousness to interdimensional beings using the internet as a medium. Creepypasta entities like Slenderman, while fictional, demonstrate how digital folklore creates quasi-real phenomena, with real-world events attributed to these characters.

Miscellaneous & Unique Entities

Skinny grey goblin with huge pointed ears, glowing yellow eyes, and clawed fingers
91

Hopkinsville-Kelly Beings (Detailed)

Beyond the general 'Little Green Men' description, witnesses provided specific details: metallic-looking skin that bullets couldn't penetrate, oversized pointed ears, large glowing eyes, clawed hands, and the ability to float and right themselves when knocked down. The sustained multi-hour siege by these beings remains one of the most dramatic encounter cases.

Illustrated depiction of Cigar-Shaped Craft Occupants
92

Cigar-Shaped Craft Occupants

Multiple cases involve beings exiting cigar or cylinder-shaped craft rather than disc UFOs. The 1954 French wave included many such reports. Witnesses describe both Nordic and unusual entity types. The craft shape, common in early sightings, has become rarer, suggesting either changes in alien technology or cultural influence on perception.

Illustrated depiction of Miniature Humanoids
93

Miniature Humanoids

Reports of beings under 2 feet tall appear worldwide. The 2003 Atacama skeleton (later proven human) exemplified claims of tiny humanoid remains. Witness accounts describe small beings in UFO contexts distinct from larger Greys. These connect to fairy folklore and raise questions about varied alien species or developmental stages.

Illustrated depiction of Transparent/Invisible Beings
94

Transparent/Invisible Beings

Reports of beings seen as distortions in the air, like the Predator film effect. Witnesses describe seeing movement and shapes without solid form. These may represent dimensional phase-shift, camouflage technology, or perceptual phenomena. The Skinwalker Ranch investigations documented similar transparency effects.

Illustrated depiction of Time Travellers
95

Time Travellers

Some entity encounters are interpreted as time travellers from Earth's future rather than aliens. The Grey phenotype could represent evolved humans. John Titor (2000-2001) claimed future human origin. The theory explains why entities seem interested in human genetics and history without requiring extraterrestrial origins.

Illustrated depiction of Astral Beings
96

Astral Beings

Entities encountered during out-of-body experiences, astral projection, and altered states. Described across meditation traditions, shamanic journeys, and spontaneous experiences. Robert Monroe's extensive OBE research documented various entity types in 'Locale II.' These beings may be distinct from physical aliens or represent the same entities in non-physical interaction.

Illustrated depiction of Simulation Administrators
97

Simulation Administrators

Hypothetical beings operating reality if we exist in a simulation, as proposed by philosopher Nick Bostrom. Some interpret alien encounters as interactions with simulation operators. Glitches, synchronicities, and paranormal phenomena could be evidence of programming. The Mandela Effect has been attributed to simulation alterations.

Stocky furry hominids with glowing blue eyes in moonlit forest and a UFO spotlight overhead
98

Bigfoot/Sasquatch (High Strangeness)

While typically classified as a cryptid, many Bigfoot reports include UFO connections: vanishing, telepathy, orb associations, and screen memory relationships. The paranormal Bigfoot theory proposes these creatures are interdimensional rather than undiscovered apes. Investigators like Stan Gordon document UFO-Bigfoot connections in Pennsylvania.

Illustrated depiction of Valiant Thor
99

Valiant Thor (Pentagon Alien)

Allegedly a Venusian who lived at the Pentagon from 1957-1960, documented by Frank Stranges in 'Stranger at the Pentagon' (1967). Described as a handsome humanoid with six fingers and no fingerprints. Claimed to advise the Eisenhower administration on nuclear disarmament. The case represents contactee-era claims of alien government cooperation.

Illustrated depiction of Unclassified/Unknown Entities
100

Unclassified/Unknown Entities

Many encounter reports defy categorisation, featuring one-time unique beings never seen again. These include: the Enfield Poltergeist entities, Zanfretta's second creature type, various isolated witness descriptions, and entities reported during single extraordinary events. The diversity suggests either vast alien variety or the creative nature of the phenomenon itself.

Emergent & Contemporary Types

Illustrated depiction of Digital/Virtual Entities
196

Digital/Virtual Entities

Beings that exist within or emerge from digital systems. As humanity becomes more connected, reports of entities associated with technology increase. These may be AI-like beings, interdimensional entities using technology as a medium, or new forms of consciousness emerging from the digital realm.

Illustrated depiction of 5G/Frequency Entities
197

5G/Frequency Entities

A contemporary category of beings allegedly associated with electromagnetic frequencies, particularly 5G networks. While scientifically dubious, some experiencers report entities appearing with technology installations. This may represent modern folklore or sensitivity to electromagnetic fields.

Illustrated depiction of Social Media Entities
198

Social Media Entities

Beings that allegedly spread through social media attention, gaining power or presence through belief and focus. Slenderman is the archetypal example - a fictional creation that generated real psychological and even violent effects. The line between thoughtform and hoax blurs in the digital age.

Illustrated depiction of Climate/Ecological Entities
199

Climate/Ecological Entities

A growing category of beings associated with environmental consciousness. These may be nature spirits responding to ecological crisis, entities warning about climate change, or new manifestations reflecting human environmental anxiety. They often deliver ecological messages.

200

Disclosure Beings

Entities specifically associated with UFO disclosure efforts. Some experiencers report beings expressing opinions about or involvement in humanity's gradual awareness of non-human intelligence. They may be orchestrating disclosure or preparing humanity for contact. A very contemporary phenomenon tied to current events.
